Through design, a steel pole is a lighter product – at least 30 percent lighter than wood. Lighter weight can reduce the cost of transportation, handling, and construction. These advantages can be even more pronounced for remote location installations.
Steel has proven to retain its strength and shape over many years. There is minimal need for tightening hardware to compensate for pole shrinkage. They are impervious to damage caused by rot, insects, or woodpeckers eliminating the need to inspect for these issues.
Less need of inspection reduces exposure of workers to risk. Because they are conductive, they do not require a dedicated ground wire. They will not burn, so ground and pole-top fires a non-issue. Where wooden poles tend to shear from vehicle impact, steel is able to bend keeping energized lines away from people.
Steel poles can be factory pre-drilled, which minimizes time spent by construction crews preparing poles for installation. Steel poles offer flexibility and an economical alternative for guying and strength problems at angles and dead ends.

The Steel Utility Pole Coalition is a coalition of industry groups, manufacturers and end-users whose goal is to promote steel poles for use in sub-transmission (69kv and below) and distribution through education, research, and marketing. Mission: a coalition of companies and organizations developed to address issues relating to the education, operations, sustainability, and technical research of steel utility structures in North America. Scope: steel distribution, under 69 kv, and steel sub-transmission, 69kv – 230kv.
