Introduction

The steel utility pole is an engineered product. It is designed to American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) criteria, National Electric Safety Code (NESC) minimum load requirements, and uses material and manufacturing to ASTM International specifications and welding to American Welding Society (AWS) specifications. The result is an extremely strong and reliable product with uniform dimensions and strength, but without twists, knots, splits or bows. Through design, a steel pole is a lighter product — at least 30 percent lighter than wood.

About the Coalition

The Steel Utility Pole Coalition is a coalition of industry groups, manufacturers and end-users whose goal is to promote steel poles for use in sub-transmission (69kv and below) and distribution through education, research, and marketing. Mission: a coalition of companies and organizations developed to address issues relating to the education, operations, sustainability, and technical research of steel utility structures in North America. Scope: steel distribution, under 69 kv, and steel sub-transmission, 69kv – 230kv.
