Introduction

Steel Utility Pole Training Steel is becoming a standard material for utility poles, as management and linemen at utility companies realize its benefits. Today, over 600 electric utilities are using steel distribution poles. Lineman training with steel is essential to helping new and veteran linemen gain valuable skills they will use right away on the job. To assist with the rather minimal learning curve associated with installing and maintaining steel utility poles, the Steel Utility Pole Coalition (SUPC) connected with respected industry leaders in utility safety and linework training, including the Institute for Safety in Powerline Construction (ISPC) and the Metropolitan Community College (MCC), to develop separate training materials for students (de-energized training) and journeyman/apprentice linemen (energized training) – including free online training.

Student & Instructor Training

Student & Instructor Training

Students and Instructor Training Over the past decade, SMDI has assisted in educating over 3,000 students in 25 different colleges on the safe handling and maintenance of steel utility poles. The majority of these students were educated through on-site Steel Utility Pole Coalition (SUPC) -sponsored hands-on training workshops. The Steel Utility Pole Coalition continues to offer these complimentary workshops for qualified schools. In 2014, the SUPC transferred more than 10 years’ worth of knowledge and experience into a complete online training series titled “Essential Lineman Training: Working with Steel Utility Poles.

Journeyman & Apprentice Training

Journeymen and Apprentice Training The SUPC has been assisting electric utilities for the past 15 years by providing educational information on the safe use of steel utility poles. In 2013, SUPC teamed up with the Institute for Safety in Powerline Construction (ISPC) and T&D PowerSkills to develop a new training module, “Energized Distribution Systems – Safe Work Practices.” The training is designed for linemen who have worked on energized distribution systems and want to learn more about working with steel poles.

In-Person Workshops

Utility Pole Lineman Workshops Steel poles are becoming an increasingly important component of a distribution system, offering benefits over wood poles to both utility companies that deploy them and to lineworkers who install and maintain them. As more utility companies begin to implement steel poles into their systems, and colleges add steel training to their curricula, industry assistance may be needed to ease the learning curve. For the past 15 years, the SUPC has assisted colleges, training centers, electric utilities, and various electric utility associations by providing complimentary training to qualified organizations.
